Chapter 18

Slowly, Sam opened her eyes to absolute whiteness; curtains, sheets, ceiling, everything. Where was she? As her blurred vision focused, she realized she wasn’t alone. With a start, she tried to sit up.

“Where am—” Her question cut off as a knife jabbed into her skull … at least that was what it felt like. Then a hand gently restrained her from rising.

“Don’t move, Ms. Cain,” the nurse said softly. “It’s best if you lie still. You’ve had a terrific injury to your head, and any sudden movement will only make you hurt more. I suggest you move slowly.”

“You’re right about the pain. Where am I?” Turning her head slightly, she winced.

“You’re at the Lady of Mercy. You were in an automobile accident.”

The curtain was pulled back. The detective entered her cubicle and rushed over to the other side of the bed. “Samantha. I mean, Ms. Cain. You’re awake. That’s a good sign, right, Miss Williams?”

“Right you are, Detective,” the nurse said.

Detective Jefferies leaned forward slightly. “Do you remember what happened? When I came around the curve, your car was spinning. I didn’t see what caused it.”

Her mind scrambled. Thoughts, images, flashed through her mind at lightning speed. “I’m not sure,” Sam whispered in a raspy voice. “It’s all a blur. Not clear.” She winced.

The nurse took her pulse as the detective tried again to get her to remember. “Relax. It’ll come to you. The doctor will be back shortly. He talked like you’d be okay. No internal injuries, just surface wounds. One of the uniforms is in the waiting room so he can take a statement from you as soon as you’re up to it.” He touched her hand and squeezed it gently as his eyes seemed to search her face for the answers he was looking for. “Still no memory?” he asked.

“Sorry.” Looking around, Sam realized she was in an emergency room where curtains hung on three sides of the bed and overhead the fluorescent lighting went on and on. In the distance, she heard other soft voices and an occasional ding of a bell, like the sound of an elevator stopping or an intercom system coming on or going off. Everything was in hushed tones.

Sam closed her eyes. All of a sudden, her mind’s eye watched in slow motion what had happened earlier. “I remember! You were right!”

“I knew you would,” he said as he leaned closer. “Hold on one minute.” He rushed past the curtain and, in less than a minute, he returned with the policeman who was there to take her statement. “Go ahead. Tell us what happened.”

Closing her eyes, she rewound the vision and replayed it in her mind. “I was driving home and as I turned the curve, a dark car pulled out in front of me. It was … it was like it was waiting for me to come around.” Sam opened her eyes and looked at Detective Jefferies in disbelief. “The car was black, like the one that seemed to be following me the other night from work.
